BONNIE DUNBAR – ASTRONAUT   
Astronaut

Introduction by Astronomer Royal then talk/s by Bonnie Dunbar  & Doug McCuistion Hear Bonnie Dunbar, former Space Shuttle Commander and NASA Astronaut tell of her experiences beyond Earth.

Bonnie is a veteran of five space flights, and has logged more than 1,208 hours (50 days) in space. See her unveil the  “Glenelg  – Twinned with Mars” interpretational sign set to become a permanent feature in the village.

PROF. JOHN C. BROWN 

Come join the most eminent astronomy experts in the land to watch, via telescope,  outer space from Earth and hear about the universe from those who know it best. Hear Scotland’s Astronomer Royal, Professor John C. Brown, astound you with knowledge and answer your questions.

Look for craters on the surface of tonight’s first quarter crescent moon. Gaze at Jupiter and its moons. A meteor shower is forecast for the evening – shooting stars should be visible throughout the night. Watch for ‘Spot’ satellites gracefully gliding across the atmosphere. It may also be possible to see Mars itself setting. Opportunities not to be missed!

Main events on the day:

PLANETARIUM SHOWS

  • Where: in the Village Hall
  • When: from 3pm

The planetarium is a large dome providing interactive solar system experiences. Come and see the stars and planets and learn more about our incredible universe. Shows will run throughout the day but early registration is recommended to avoid disappointment.

MARS ROVER EXPERIENCE

  • Where: in the School hall
  • When: from 3pm

Drive the Mars Rover around a simulated Martian landscape using  your skill to discover hidden items of interest.  On completion of the challenge there will be a certificate for each participant and a special winner’s certificate for the highest score.

For teams of 1 -3 players.

 GEOCACHE GLENELG – Sponsored by Garmin

  • Where: in the Hotel grounds
  • When: from 3pm

Use our hand-held GPS units (kindly donated by Garmin) to locate and  discover hidden treasure in our local area. Come to the marquee in the Hotel grounds to register.

 STARGAZING WITH THE ASTROMOMER ROYAL, PROF. JOHN C.BROWN

 BUSHCRAFT & NATURAL NAVIGATION

  • Where: in the Hotel grounds
  • When: Firelighting at 5:30pm, Natural navigation walk is at 8pm (booking is essential for the walk)

Learn to light fires in the oldest fashioned way with outdoor survival expert and natural navigator Malcolm Handoll of Five Senses. Learn about survival techniques in the wilderness and experience life lived close to nature.  Walk and learn to navigate by starlight as our ancestors did. Fire kits will be available to purchase.

 TARTAN MARTIAN CEILIDH

  • Where: in the Village Hall
  • When: from 8:30pm

Come and hooleigh this wonderful night away to the Cast Ewe ceilidh band – Glenelg’s finest inter-galactic performers. A buffet featuring wonderful local produce is included in the price. Bar available. Raffle. ID a must for Under 25’s
